By the year 1810 a dam along with saw and grist mills were built at the river near Bailey Road by Isaac Wilcox and Francis Kelsey. The lumber from the saw mill was then hauled to Old Portage and used to build small ships that took part in the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812.
