Charles A. Davis – Newspaper Publisher, Grocer & Mayor

The C. A. Davis Grocery was listed in the city directory as being located in the Loomis Block at the corner of Portage and Front Streets.  To the left is a drugstore run by Edward Creque. Mr. Creque owned his store for 27 years before selling it in 1929. He passed away in 1941.

I’m not sure which man in the picture above is Charles A. Davis but he’d be about 50 years of age at the time of the photo. His wife June Laughead passed away sometime between 1901 and 1906. Prior to Mr. Davis’ wife June’s passing he was a newspaper publisher for the Cuyahoga Falls Reporter.

Perhaps by the drastic change in his life, he also decided to change careers because he then became a grocer and opened the store. As if that job wasn’t enough, in 1905 Charles Davis became the Cuyahoga Falls Mayor and held the office until 1909. In October 1908 he married a woman by the name of Lucy Laughead.

Mr. Davis resided at 433 N. Fourth Street.
