My father was Marcel and you have the dates wrong. I wrote a small book on Marcel’s that is at the Historical Society as well as many local libraries.
The restaurant was purchased in 1952 from the Hauser’s and sold to Ernie Genovese in 1975.
Hi, my mother was Flo, a long time employee at Marcel’s. She worked as a waitress for many years, and became a hostess sometime in the later 60’s. Do you have any idea when she started at Marcel’s?
My parents’ favorite restaurant when it was Marcel’s. This was in the 1960’s and 70’s. Their favorite dinner Steak and Scampis…
I worked there saturday nights doing dishes.
my mom was the first employee marcel hired. i was just born when she started working there. i remember the 3 people that ran the restaurant. there was marcel, of course, and mr. hall and a gentleman named dick ran the kitchen. my mom was the hostess and pretty much of the overseeing of the dining room. i spent so much time at the restaurant when i was a kid. it really was considered one of the best restaurants in the area.
We moved to North Haven Blvd. in 2002. We loved having Arts Place so close. We used to walk there and enjoyed a good meal with good people. It had such a great atmosphere and good food. I was so disappointed when they closed.
The worst part was they opened a parts store in its place. Honestly it’s such a ugly store.
Would you have the recipe for the hot bacon salad dressing? We now live in Florida but Arts was our favorite restaurant.
Thank You.
I worked there as a busboy in 82-83. At that time it was being run by a brother -sister team. Dave and Donna, I think it was.

As the daughter of Marcel, I have been to the auditor’s office and traced the deeds back and information on this page is incorrect. The following information is what was found by actual research:
This location was originally owned by Carl Graefe, President of Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Graefe was a real estate developer in the 1920’s and built a building on this property as his office. The funny thing is, Carl Graefe ate at Marcel’s all the time. The building was converted into a barbecue restaurant in the early 1930’s. It was remodeled and enlarged in 1933 and became Hauser’s Tavern, a neighborhood pub. The outside was still a Spanish style like the original real estate office. Steve Davis leased the Tavern from the Hausers and remodeled some more and called it Davis’ Restaurant.
It became Marcel’s in 1952 and became Art’s Place in 1975. It was never Del Rio Inn or North Haven Inn. It was LaFonda’s for a very short time in the 1920s and must have been a lease, as there was no deed.
