Vaughn Machinery Company was an important factory in Cuyahoga Falls that produced machinery for the steel, rubber, copper, and clay industries. After the Vaughn Machinery Company closed in 1971 the Sheraton Hotel was built on the site in 1990. The dam and the foundation of the powerhouse were left intact behind the hotel.
The original power house and dam were made of wood. During the flood of March 1913 they were destroyed and swept away. It didn’t take long before they were rebuilt with concrete and brick. Now nearly 100 years later, the dam is in the final stages of being removed in order to return the Cuyahoga River back to its natural state.
